Mike Major – Designer at GIK Acoustics

Designer at GIK Acoustics, Mixing/Recording/Mastering Engineer and Producer, Author, SonicScoop Contributor

Mike Major has been in the recording business for 30 years. In that time, he has worked with many artists from all over the globe, including At The Drive-In, Sparta, Coheed, and Cambria, As Tall As Lions, Davenport Cabinet, Malibu Stacy, Mary Trembles, Daniel Ahern, and the Jones, Quiet Company, The March Divide, and hundreds of others. He was responsible for the music mix for the video game Splinter Cell: Blacklist, which Sencit Music composed.

Mike runs his personal mixing/mastering studio, Mike’s Mix Room, in Dunedin, FL, where he specializes in mixing and mastering. He still loves to record and produce when presented with the right project.

Mike is also an author of Recording Drums: The Complete Guide. The book covers the complicated subject of recording drums in a complete, comprehensive, yet easy-to-understand manner. The book will be available in early April through all major book retailers. He is also a regular contributor to Sonic Scoop, an excellent online audio-centric magazine, and blog.

Recording great drum sounds is one of the most challenging tasks facing any drummer, audio engineer, or music producer. Capturing the variety, nuance, and excitement of the drum kit and other percussion instruments is part art, part science, and part creative experimentation–and there’s a lot more to it than simply setting up a mic and hitting the Record button. In this comprehensive book, recording engineer/producer/mixer Mike Major leads you through the sometimes complex and often misunderstood art of recording drums. Along the way, you’ll cover all the ins and outs, including establishing the drums’ role in the song, preparing the drum kit (and the room) for recording, choosing microphones and getting sounds, tracking, overdubbing, editing, and choosing the final take. Not only will you find plenty of tips and techniques to help your recordings sound better than ever, but you’ll also be inspired to examine the philosophies and thought processes that go into creating and capturing drum sounds that are unique, interesting, and powerful. With plenty of helpful illustrations and sample setups, and all of the files you need on the companion website, RECORDING DRUMS: THE COMPLETE GUIDE puts you on the fast track to great drum sounds.

I’ve been fortunate to work with Mike for over ten years. The notion of surrounding yourself with some talented and great people goes without saying. Mike is a person who has given me input on the tracking process but also creative feedback. This is such an important thing to have because it gives you the ability to grow in areas where you just not that comfortable.
I owe a lot to a guy who lives a little over 1,600 miles away, haha. I’ve been lucky enough to work with him and will continue. Every mix I get back from Mike is always fucking bonkers amazing.

If you are interested in working with Mike, please feel free to fill out the contact form at the bottom of his website page, and he will get back to you promptly to discuss your project.
